UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION D

8 WASHINGTON, D. C. 20655 AL4 I S E MEMORANDUM FOR:

C. Thomas. Chief Standardization and Special Projects Branch, Division of Licensing FROM:

0. Parr, Chief, Auxiliary Systems Branch, Division of Systems Integration

SUBJECT:

REVIEW OF VITAL AREAS FOR BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNIT 2 By memorandum dated August 2,1984, you requested our review of Section 4.0 -

Vital Area Identification of the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) prepared by NMSS for the Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 2.

Prior to your request, a meeting between the NRR and HMSS staff was held concerning vital area identification.

During that meeting it was agreed that ASB would review the NMSS SER for information only and would not apply any vital area identifica-tion criteria beyond the present requirements of 10 CFR 73.55.

In accor-dance with that agreement, we have reviewed the Beaver Valley, Unit 2 vital areas and have identified no concerns related to meeting 10 CFR 73.55 require-ments assuming that the refueling water storage tank is included in a vital area. The NMSS SER recognizes the lack of a protected water source and it is our understanding that the applicant has agreed to identify and protect this water source as vital.
