This Data Transmittal Report (DTR) summarizes the results of the PANDA transient system test M3A which is a simulation of a break in the main steam line of the SBWR. The test was conducted with nominal initial conditions, similar to those calculated for the SBWR under SSAR assumptions at one hour into the LOCA. One-half of the steam flow from the RPV was directed to drywell 1 and the other one-half to drywell 2 (symmetric case). The objectives of the 20 hours2.314815e-4 days <br />0.00556 hours <br />3.306878e-5 weeks <br />7.61e-6 months <br /> test M3A are to demonstrate the repeatability of key parameters of the base case test M3 and to show the effect of PCC/IC pool configuration / refilling on global system performance.

The DTR, for test M3A together with the Umbrella DTR satisfies the requirements specified in the Test Plan (TP) 25A5764 Rev 2 (GE document) section 10. The DTR includes: General descnption and purpose of test, test facility configuration description and a table of actual and specified initial conditions. Further, the test results are presented by time history plots over the test duration and the main observations are given.

During test M3A five vacuum breaker openings occurred. They were initiated by the periodic PCC pool refillings to maintain levels. These VB openings did not affect the global DW/WW pressure response, which followed very closely the M3 pressure curve. The hydraulically isolated PCC/IC pools allows for heat balances which address some of the flow

measurement problems, identified in test M3.

The M3A test objectives have been reached.

1. Introduction 1.1 General Description and Purpose of Test i

i Test M3A is a repetition of the base case test M3. Adaitionally, the effect of hydraulically isolated J

PCC/IC pools and the influence of periodic pool refilling on the global system performance were investigated. M3A is a simulation of a break in the main steam line of the SBWR. The nominal initial containment conditions were similar to those calculated for the SBWR under SSAR assumptions at one hour into the LOCA. The initial drywell pressure was approximately 300 kPa.

One-half of the steam from the RPV was directed to DW1 which feeds one PCC condenser, and the other one-half of the steam was directed to DW2 with two PCC condensers connected. This was achieved with separate blowdown lines from the RPV to each of the two drywells. The two blowdown lines have essentia!!y equal flow resistances. These test conditions represent a symmetrical situation in the PANDA facility. This test provides data for comparison with tests M3 (base case) and M3B (repeatability and effect of PCC/IC pool configuration).

1.2 Purpose of Report This Data Transmittal Report (DTR) is compiled in accordance with the requirements specified in Test Plan (TP) 25A5764 Rev 2 (GE document) Section 10 [1]. The report covers the results for 1

the transient integral system test M3A which has been run in accordance with the test procedure described in [2]. The DTR provides detailed information about test objectives, the test facility configuration and the test initial conditions. The test results main observations are reported and a number of plots, which support the findings are included. The conclusions about the adequacy of test data and the applicability of test objectives are given. The composition of the data record is desenbed in an Appendix. The general information about the overall test program, the PANDA facility, the instrumentation, the data acquisition system, the facility characterization tests, the PANDA experimental data base and the error analysis is described in the DTR umbrella report

[4). The apparent test reaults for test M3A are summarized in (3).

2. Test Objectives 2.1 General Objectives The objectives of the PANDA integral system tests are to provide additional data to: a) confirm the capability of TRACG to predict SBWR containment system performance, including potential systems interaction effects (Integral System Tests) and b) demonstrate startup and long term operation of a passive containment cooling system (Concept Demonstration).

2.2 Specific Objectives The specific objectives of test M3A which was conducted with nominal post-LOCA conditions one l

hour after a Main Steam Line Break are:

- To demonstrate transient system response and repeatability of key parameters of the base case test M3.

- To show the effect of PCC/IC pool configuration and periodic pool refilling on the global PCC system behaviour.

3. Test Facility Configuration and Initial Conditions 1

3.1 Test Facility Configuration The PANDA test facility is described in detail in Section 3 of PSI report ALPHA-606 [4]. For test M3A the PANDA facility was configured to simulate the SBWR post-LOCA configuration as follows:

1) The RPV supplies steam to each drywell with two steam lines (one to each drywell). These two steam lines have the same pressure loss characteristics and, therefore, allow for symmetric injection of steam into the two drywells.
2) RPV heater power is controlled as a function of time to simulate the scaled decay heat and stored energy release (as specified in [1]).
3) The IC unit is isolated by closing the inlet and outlet valves (i.e., the IC feed, drain and vent lines are closed).
4) All three PCC units are lined-up to take feedflow from the drywells, to vent noncondensables and steam into the water volume of the suppression pool, and drain condensate to the GDCS volume.
5) The three PCC pools and the IC pool are isolated from each other. During the test, water is added to the PCC pools (with a flow rate of approximately 2 kg/s) via the auxiliary water system as needed, from the bottom to maintain level.
6) The only direct lines of communication between the drywell and wetwell are through the vacuum breakers (when the wetwell pressure exceeds drywell pressure sufficiently to open the vacuum breaker) and the main vent lines (which are submerged within the wetwells).
7) The GDCS pressure equalization lines to both drywells are open.
8) The GDCS drain line with check valve is lined up to return PCC condensate to the RPV.
9) The Equalizing lines between the RPV and wetwells are valved out of service.

l 3.2 Test initial Conditions l

The test initial conditions represent the state of the system one hour after scram. These conditions are presented in Table 3.1. The " Average Value' represents the arithmetic mean over the one minute measurement period just before connecting the drywells to the RPV. The

" Requested Value" is the value as it is specified in the Test Plan [1].

5. Conclusions l

l 5.1 Adequacy of Test Data l

l The integral system test M3A has provided data of the overall system behaviour in an adequate i

5 manner. Based on the analysis of the test data [3] the test acceptance enteria have clearly been reached. All zero and instrument checks for test M3A have been successfully completed and the instrument readings were within the permitted ranges.

l All required instrumentation performed well except for the two oxygen sensors at the lowest levels l

in DW1 and DW2. This was acceptable because the backup oxygen sensors at higher elevations j

in the drywell did work.

5.2 Applicability to Test Objectives l

l The test objectives as stated in Section 2 of this report have been reached:

  • A comparison of the data from test M3A and the base case test M3 showed generally the same overall system behaviour for both tests. DW and WW pressures followed very similar trends. The DW peak pressures differed by only 4 kPa.
  • The PCC/IC pool configuration for test M3A (isolated pools) and the periodic refilling of the l

pools lead to five vacuum breaker openings throughout the test, but this did not affect the global system performance.

The PCC pool level response with the isolated pools can be used to accurately determine the heat removal rate from the iridividual PCC units.
