MEMORANDUM FOR:
y{1liamD.Paton Counsel for NRC Staff FROM:
James P. Knight, Assistant Director for Components ano Structures Engineering, DE
SUBJECT:
MIDLAND NUCLEAR PLANT: GEOSCIENCES BRANCH ESTIMATE OF TIME REQUIRED TO COMPLETE REVIEW As you have requested, an e:timate has been made on how long it will take to review the various submittals (Parts 1-3) for the Midland site.
Part 1 of the submittal " Site Specific Response Spectra, Top of Original Ground Surface" has been examined by the staff. A meeting was held on April 16, 1981 to discuss Part I and the staff has requested additional information to be provided by the applicant. From the time when the applicant submits this additional information it is estimated that it will take about 30 days for the staff to reach a position.
Part 2 of the submittal will address possible ground motion amplification through the fill. This has not been docketed as of yet. The Part 2 review will involve 3 branches (GSB, SEB, HGEB) because of its complex subject matter.
It will take about 3 months for the Geosciences Branch to review the site specific spectra portion of the Part 2 submittal.
Part 3 of the submittal addresses.probabilistic estimates of grouno motion for the Midland site. A formal review of this information will not be unoer-taken unless it is necessary in making a final determination. Part 3 was submitted to help gain insight about the relative seismicity near the site.
If this position is formally reviewed it would take at least 3 months ano possibly more due to the complex subject matter.
