Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

e Re:

Provisional Operating License: DPR-17 Docket No.: 50-220

~

Thank you for your letter apprising us of problems with failed hangers for Emergency Core Cooling System suction hender as described in your Directorate of Regulatory Operations Bulletin No. 72-1.

The suction pipe for the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit 1 emer-gency core cooling pumps enters the torus radially in the lower segment and is equipped with a strainer on the inner circumferance of the torus.

We do not have a separate suction header for any of the engineered core cooling system such as described in your Directorate of Regulatory n

Operatipns Bulletin No. 72-1.

Therefore, inspection of the hangers is obviated.

Very truly yours, Se m.e.<.W F. J. Schneider Vice President - Operations
