ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 SERVICE WATER INTAKE STRUCTURE - 10CFR, PART 21 DOCKET NO. 50-358, CONSTRUCTION PERMIT CPPR-88, W.O.
- 57300-957, JOB E-5590 This letter confirms the te'lephone conversation on June 18, 1979, between Mr.
G. Fiorelli of your office and myself, con-cerning the Service Water Intake Structure for the Zimmer Project.
A silting condition, the cause of which at this time is indeterminate, could result in a reportable item in accordance with the requirements of 50.55(e).
An evaluation of the cause of this condition is in progress by our architect engineer, Sargent
& Lundy, and ourselves.
The degree of silting could be the result of an abnormal intake condition caused by the initial removal of the closure bulkhead and intermittent service water pump operation compounded by several flooding periods of the Ohio River'.
It could possibly be the result of the particular design configuration of the. intake structure.
We shall apprise you within 30 days of this letter of the progress in the evaluation of the identified condition.
Periodic reports shall be submitted in accordance with regulatory requirements.

ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 SERVICE WATER INTAXE STRUCTURE 50.55 (e)
W.O. 457300-957, JOB E-5590 On June 20, 1979, we submitted our letter QA-1148 to your office, identifying a silting condition.which had been dis-covered in the river pump house intake flume and intake structure.
We have evaluated the cause of this condition and have determined that it was influenced to a large extent by various seasonal river conditions.
bulkhead between September,The river entrance to the intake flume was sealed by 1976 and March, 1978.
During the period of September, 1976 through April 24, 1979, there were two 3
(2) long duration flood stages of the Ohio River which were the apparent cause of much of the collection of sedimentation in the intake flume.
The service water pumps were not in operation during most of this period and as the river increased in elevation and subsequently returned to pool stage, in suspension was deposited within the intake flume behind thethe silt normally held j
bulkhead.
\\
A thorough inspection of the intake fiume and the service water pump bay was conducted and a significant amount of sedi-We are presently in the process of mentation was discovered.
removing this sedimentation and anticipate that during pormal 1
plant operation similar circumstances will not result-in a ecm-parable sedimentation condition.
Also, during operation of the
)
plant, a sedimentation monitoring program will be implemented to
=
1 assure that excess sedimentation is not accumulated in the intake.
