/j H. E. Book, Senior Radiation Specialist Region V, Division of Compliance DEPT. OF THE NAW, NAVAL UNDERSEA RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CENTER LICENSE NOS. 4-13495-1, 4-13452-1 AND SNM-1154 RESULTS OF MARCH 10, 1970 INSPECTION The subject inspection did not disclose any health and safety problems.
The two experiments started by NRDL at San Clemente Island (involving the 2 SNAP-21, strontium-90 devices and the pug 2 microspheres) are being continued by the licensec. All other radioactive materials possessed by the.licenscc were roccived from NRDL and havo been stored to date.'
The experiment involving the pug 2 microsphercs is not described in any detail in the license application. Paragraph 9 of the inspection notes describes the experiment. The September 26, 1969, application only states the spheres will be used in the SEPO (Space Electric Power Office) program in ocean engineering studies, specifically " Radio-nuclidos Released to Sea Water from Nuclear Povered Sources".
Suppli-mental information, submitted December 15, 1969, describes the spheres as uncoated and 50 to 200 microns in diameter. It appears that DML may not be informed about the specifics of the experiment being performed.
