We endorse the attached requests by the Naval Undersea Center (NUC), San Diego to amend License No. SNM-1154 as cited in enclosures (1) and (2).

The radioisotope, Plutonium-238, samples are to be used to assess the effects of the ocean environment on the physical and chemical character-istics of pure plutonium oxide (PP0) to determine its suitability for use as fuel pellets in radioisotope heat sources.

The quantity previously licensed in Amendment No. 06 of the subject 4

license is to be increased from 52 grams to 61 grams due to fabrication output supply.

The Center further requests the addition of 31 grams of Plutonium-238 in the form of PPO to its license for test exposures in a tidal area in accordance with enclosure (2).

Please note that enclosure (1) supersedes enclosure (2) with respect to the requested material quantity.

The Center will refrain from making any shipments of presently held samples, in the container which has been used, until a certificate of compliance

for the shipping container has been issued to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). We have been advised that the applicable Department of Transportation Special Permit No. 6286 expired on 31 July 1974.
