This letter provides our response to your letter (Reference) related to Generic Letter 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330 1 Fire Barriers."

Recuest No. 1 In your response to GL 92-08 you indicated that the actions necessary to restore (or conflua) the operao111ty of these barriers will be based on the results of the NUMARC program. The staff expects that licensees referencing this program, will review the testing results and, within 30 days after the completion of this test program, inform the NRC of the actions necessary and the schedule for restoring the operability of l these fire barriers.

Response

Once NUMARC provides a report of the tested configurations, we will review the test information. Within 30 days of receipt of this report, we will inform the NRC of the actions necessary and the schedule for restoring the operability of the fire barriers bounded by the NUMARC testing.

l Recuest No. 2 For those plant specific or unique configurations that are not bound by the NUMARC program, please provide within 30 days from the receipt of this letter, your schedules for site specific fire endurance testing of these unique configurations that are not bound by the NUMARC program.

Reauest No. 3 (a) The staff requests a copy of relevant portions of the subject Stone and Webster Engineering Company Study, " Fire Protection per Appendix R Requirements Ampacity Study" which provides the ampacity derating analysis of the fire barrier installed at Prairie Island, j (b) Also, you should identify the Thermo Science Incorporated test report (s) used as a technical basis for ampacity derating utilized for cables enclosed by Thermo-Lag material.

Response

I l (a) Attached are the Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation Study of l

September 16, 1993 and updated tabulations contained in Prairie Island Ampacity Study Tabulations of February 28, 1987.

l l (b) Thermo Science Incorporated provided ampacity ratings which we did not use. Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation calculations used the thermal conductivity properties of the Therm Lag material, as provided by Thermo Science Incorporated, to generate the ampacity deratings. We l do not have the Thermo Science Incorporated test reports from which the thermal conductivity properties were obtained.

This letter contains the following new NRC commitments:

Once NUMARC provides a report of the tested configurations, we will l review the test information. Within 30 days of receipt of this report, we will inform the NRC of the actions necessary and the schedule for l restoring the operability of the fire barriers bounded by the NUMARC ,
