We have previously committed that, by December 31,1996, we would complete the activities necessary to resolve the concerns discussed in Generic Letter 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers". This commitment date was based on the scope of the project as we could foresee it at the time. All locations requiring removal of Thermo-Lag and replacement with Darmatt will be completed by the end of January 1997.

During the engineering phase of the project, we have re-done the 10CFR50 Appendix R Safe Shutdown Analysis for Prairie Island. As a result of the re-analysis, which was performed with the intent of minimizing the total amount of fire protective wrap necessary, we have identified several small projects which also need to be completed prior to complete close-out of the issues addressed by Generic Letter 92-08. }/ .

None of these projects involve removal of Thermo-Lag from required safe-shutdown

raceways. These projects will be completed by the end of June 1997. Fire watches /

established in response to the Thermo-Lag issue will be maintained until completion of these projects. The remaining work represents less than 15% of the total effort at rq }

Prairie Island to resolve the fire wrap issues.

In this letter we have modified one Nuclear Regulatory Commission commitment, changing the completion date from December 31,1996 to June 30,1997.
