SPLICING INSTRUCTIONS 1.0 PURPOSE 1.1 The purpose of this instruction is to document the proper method for making splices in small cables to ensure that the occurrence of oversized, weak, and hard to identify splices is minimized.

NOTE:

Cables are spliced for economy and efficiency of production at various operations. All splices are temporary, are made for manu-facturing purposes only and are removed prior to final testing and shipment.

2.0

' APPLICATION II 2.1 This instruction applie.s to all areas when splices are v-made.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY It is the responsibility of the operator to make all 3.1 l

splices in accordance with this instruction.

l The production supervisor is res'ponsible for personnel l

3.2 i

being properly trained in these methods.

l 4.0 INSTRUCTIONS l

4.1 Non Shielded Components 4.1.1 Strip insulation about six (6) inches from each end of the conductor to be spliced.

If conductors are of solid construction with 4.1.1.1 light insulation thickness (conductor diameter of overall diameter of insulation),

greater than cut three (3) inches from end of approximately 1/3 of conductors (insulation was stripped for six (6) inches).

(Figure II)

Twist all the remaining strands, including the drain 4.1.3 wire, if any, on each end to be spliced.

(Figure III) 4.1.4 Make a hand twisted splice.

(Figure IV)

Cut ends of splice so that they do not extend over 4.1.5 the insulation.

It Measure the outside diameter over the splice.

4.1.6

(]g should not exceed maximum cable outside diameter.

\\"

If high spots exceed maximum cable outside diameter, press them down with pliers.

If they still exceed maximum cable outside diameter, remake the splice.

Wrap yellow tape on cach side of the splice as a 4.1.7 visual flag.

4.1.8 Test the splice by trying to pull it apart by hand.

If it' breaks, remake it.

Insert colored flyer at the splice on the take-up reel.

4.1.9 Record lengths on the back of the reel tag and on 4.1.10 the appropriate paperwork.

Top length will be marked "T".

Bottom length will be marked "B".

4.2 Shielded Components 4.2.1 Jacketed Shielded Components 4.2.1.1 Strip the jacket off approximately six (6) inches from the shielded component on both ends to be spliced together.

4.2.1.2 Pull back the shield.

4.2.1.3 Strip the insulation from the primary conductor.

II 4.2.1.4 Pull the shield back over the bare conductor, s-making sure that conductor and shield are touching.

l l

NOTE:

This step ensures shorting of the con-ductor to the shield so that the splice will be detected at subsequent testing operations, if it does not get removed before getting there.

l 4.2.1.5 Repeat the steps in 4.1 for making a splice, considering the shielded component as solid.

4.2.2 Unjacketed Shielded Components 4.2.2.1 Pull back shield and strip the insulation on, the primary conductor.

4.2.2.3 Repeat the steps in 4.1 for making a splice, considering above shielding component as solid.

r 4.3 Cables going to Shielding 4.3.1 Leave all ends (both bottom and top of each length) taped to either flange of the take-up reel.

Do not connect any ends by splicing or any 4.3.2
