DPR-53 EVENT DATE 02-17-31 REPORT DATE 03-17-31 ATTACHMENT EVENT DESCRIPTION AND PROBABLE CONSEOUENCES (CONT'D)

At 0400 while investigating the cause for dirty oil in the inboard turbine bearing on illi AFW pump, the mechanic discovered that the bearing journal had become worn to the point where replacement was required (T.S.

3.7.1.2). #11 AFW pump was repaired and returned to service af ter successfully completing a post maintenance operatonal test at 2005 on 02-19-81. #12 AFW pump which recently had its inboard turbine bearing replaced in January 1931 remained operable during the event. In addition, the manual feed system remained operable. The event did not affect the health or safety of the public. LER 30-71 describes similar events.

CAUSE DESCRIPTION AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS (CON'D)

~The bearing was heavily heat scored and babbit material was found suspended in the oil. The damage to the bearing could be caused by improper oillevel or contaminated oil. Changes are being made to the sightglasses to add clear markings for maintaining the oil within the required control band and the preventive maintenance program is being modified to increase oil change from every refueling outage to once a month.
