Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 4 Division of Operating Reactors United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

Dear Mr. Reid:
This is in response to your letter of August 18, 1980 requesting a discussion of the high energy line break effects on: a) the flow sensing lines inside the secondary shielding, and b) the flow transmitters for the redundant Reactor Coolant System (RCS) flow sensing lines at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1.
We have reviewed the pipe routing for these flow sensing lines and transmitters in light af high energy pipe breaks.
Excluding the RCS, it has been determined that sufficient separation exists between the flow sensing lines and flow transmitters and all high energy piping systems. For breaks in the RCS, operability of these flow sensing lines. and the transmitters is not required since RCS flow is not needed to be input to the Reactor Protection System for this condition.
The flow sensing lines have been routed at the opposite side of the stexn gen-erator from the main steam and feedwater piping inside the secondary shield.
This provides sufficient separation.
Outside the steam generator compartments where the transmitters are located, a concrete floor slab exists between the closest high energy pipe and the transmitters. There are no other high energy piping systems in this area.
Yours very truly, f
