1. LER NUMBER: LER/RC 80-35/03L-1
11. LICENSEE NAME: Commonwealth Edison Company Quad-Cities Nuclear Power Station lil. FACILITY NAME: Unit Two IV. DOCKET NUMBER: 050-265 V. EVENT DESCRIPTION:

On December 28, 1980, the Drywell Equipmert Drain Sump outboard isolation valve A0-2-2001-16 had an excessive closure time of approximately 15 minutes. The stroke of the valve was lengthened, the packing was adjusted and both the open and shut limit switches were reset. On the same day the valve was cycled three times satisfactorily with a closure time of 4.2.

seconds. On January 26, 1981, valve A0-2-2001-16 again showed erratic closure times. Time for the valve to close ranged ' rom a few minutes to satisfactory operation. A work request was initiated to further investigate the erratic closure times.

VI. PROBABLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE OCCURRENCE:

Per Technical Specification 3.7.D.2., continued reactor operation is allowed, provided that at least one valve in that llae is closed. The redundant outboard isolation valve, A0-2-2001-15, was closed. At all times the reactor was operated withir, the requirements of the Technical Specification.

Impact upon the system was also minimal. The recirculation through the Drywell Equipment Drain Sump coolers was in no way impaired, and the sump had been pumped down immediately prior to the occurrence. Coolant leakages were within the Technical Specification limits.

Vll. CAUSE:

Upon investigation it was found that an accumulaticn of sediment from the Drywell Equipment Drain Sump had collected in the valve body around the stem and valve disc areas, which was preventing obstruction-free travel of the valve internals.

Vill. CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The Drywell Equipment Drain Sumps were out cf service during the repair and the following items were performed: the A0-2-2001-16 valve was dismantled and the internals thoroughly cleaned of all residue and sediment. i t was then re-assembled with a new bcdy to bonnet gasket. On February 6, 1981, it was stroked three times satisfactorily and found to be within Technical Speci fication Table 3.7-1.
