Narrative

Report for LER 50-321/1980-103.

On August 22, 1980, with the reactorat 99% power, high pressure indications on the inlet of both plant service water strainers were received in the con-trol room. High temperature alarms on systems served by plant service water were-also received, which indicated that the~ flow of plant service water was being restricted. ' At this time both divisions of plant service water were adminis-tratively declared inoperable.

A limited condition for operations per Tech Spec 3.5.J.3 was established.and reactor shutdown was started.

~ Upon investigation both plant service water strainers were found to be partially restricted. The IP41-D103B strainer was inoperable due to a coupling failure on the drive motor and the power supply breaker for the IP41-D103A strainer drive mechanism was found tripped.

The coupling on the IP41-D103B strainer was repaired and the breaker was reset on

'A'.

Both strainers were backwashed and both divisions of. plant service water was then returned to service.

This incident had no gener[c effect on-Unit II service water strainers.

The strainers for-Unit 'II are of the same design but. were supplied by a different manufacturer- (R. P. Adams, Inc. ).

Both of the Unit II service water' strainers were inspected with no abnormalities noticed.

This. is not a repetitive occurrence.

There was no effects upon public heal.th

- and safety due to this event.
