RII:DRQ 101 Marietta St., Suite 3100 50-302/79-24 Atlanta, CA 30303

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

We of fer the following supplemental information to the "A" apparent item of noncompliance noted in the referenced inspection report:

NOTICE OF VIOLATION A.

As required by 10 CFR 20.203(c), each entrance or access point to a high radiation area shall be equipped with a control device and a conspicuous visual or audible alarm. Radiation Control Procedure RP-101, Radiation Protection Manual, Section 4.2.2.a states, in part, that, "in lieu of the control device or alarm signal, each high radiation area in which the in-tensity of radiation is greater than 100 mrem /hr. but less than 1000 mrem /

hr. shall be barricaded and conspicuously posted as a high radiation area..."

Contrary to the above, on July 8, 1979, on two separate occasions, the entrance to the block orifice room in the Auxiliary Building was posted as a high radia-tion area but not barricaded.

Response

The CR-3 Chemistry and Radiation Protection staff has established a scheduled surveillance that requires a "once per shif t" inspection of all ac-cessible, posted, high radiation areas within the facility.

These scheduled inspections will be conducted by Chem / Rad technicians and corrective actions taken, as required.

The results of these inspections, including any discrepancies, will be documented in the Health / Physics Log Book.

{

We feel that this additional action will provide more positive assurance that future recurrence of this item will be prevented.

Full compliance has been achieved this date.

Should there be further questions, please contact us.

Very truly yours, FLORIDA POWER CORPORATION J.
