POWER AUTHORITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK JAMES A. FITZPATRICK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT DOCKET NO. 50-333 ATTACHMENT TO LER 80-015/03L-0 Page 1 of I During normal operation, Low Pressure Coolant injection System Independent Power Supply "A" inverter tripped for no apparent reason.

As requi red by Technical Speci fications paragraph 3.9.F.2, the other independent power supply system and i ts associated battery was veri fied operable by successful completion of Operations Surveillance Test F-ST-16F titled "LPCI Independent Power Supply Three-Month Test" and the motor control center associated with the independent power supply which had tripped was switched to its maintenance power supply.

The re fo re, the event did not represent a significant hazard to the public health and safety.

Investigation revealed that the cause of the inverter trip was due to the failure of filter capacitors in the control ci rcui ts associated with the in-verter. The failure of these capacitors allowed electrical noise to cause mis-fi ring of the inverter silicon controlled recti fier (SCR) circuits resulting in trip of the inverter.

Following replacement of the two failed capacitors, the inverter was restored to service in an operable status the next day.
