Degradation of the makeup system (Makeup - 1B Czsing Drain) reportable under Technical Specification 6.9.1.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 1 Power Operation (98%)

Description of Occurrence; At 2300, it was reported that makeup pump MUP-1B had a crack in a casing drain line weld. Makeup Pump 1B was declared inoperable and maintenance actions were initiated. Maintenance restored operability and MUP-1B was returned to service 6 October 1979 following satisfactory completion of Surveillance Procedure SP-340.

Designation of Apparent Cause:

The cause of this event is attributed to cyclic stress fatigue.

Analysis of Occurrence:

No effect upon the plant or general public as redundant makeup pumps lA and 1C were operable.

Corrective Action

Makeup pump MUP-1B was repaired and returned to service at 1020 6 October 1979. Additional corrective action will be based on the results of engineering evaluation 79-7-7.

Failure Data:

This is the third occurrence of this type reported.
