'Af (412) 456-6000 435 Suth Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 152 9 August 30, 1979 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn:
A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactor Branch No. 1 Division of Operating Reactors Washington, DC 20555
Reference:
Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334 Soil Stability and Minimum River Water Elevation for Operation Gentlemen:
Our letter of February 12, 1979 confirmed our com=itment to perform additional core borings at Beaver Valley and to perform liquifaction analyses based upon the results of these additional borings.
We also informed you that we had instituted administrative controls which required us to comply with the action statement of Appendix A Technical Specification 3.7.6.1.a in the event that the river water elevation reached 680 feet MSL.
The results of the core boring program and the liquifaction analyses were transmitted to you on May 2, 1979, by Mr. E. J. Woolever, Vice President, Engineering and Construction Division of the Duquesne Light Company.
The analytical results indicate that no potential for liquifaction exists in the soils beneath the turbine building at Beaver Valley for any river water elevation up to and including 690 feet MSL.
We are, therefore, requesting your approval to eliminate the administrative control described in our February 12, 1979 letter.
Ycur early consideration of this matter will be appreciated.
Very truly yours, Y
C. N. Dunn Vice President, Operations
