Proposed Metification Letter to Recipients of Sealed Sources
~
Your Memo of April 13, 1972 i
Mr. George E.
Griffin St. Louis, Missouri i
I have enclosed a draft of the letter which Bob Schimmel proposes to send to all customers who have purchased neutron source = from Monsanto Research Corporation at the Dayton Labor tory.
The draft follows the text that I recommended to ob in all essentials, and it includes, I believe, all of the salient features recommended in your memo of April 13.
Would you please review the draft and let me know if you have any comments or suggestions concerning it.
Please note that Bob would like to start sending these letters out on August 14.
Bob is reluctant to send it, of course, because of the possible negative effect that it might have on customers.
He feels that the AEC Licensing Division should assume the responsibility.
I personally do not' feel that the letter is that negative, and I believe that many of the customers may appreciate our thoughtfulness in telling them about the matter.

11 July 1972 H. L. Coleman our Contaminated PuBe Source w.n c,
R EFE R ENC E To R. L. Schimmel Bert Blanke of the USAEC at Mound Laboratory called to report to us that they had just received a leaking PuBe source from Dresser-Atlas.
This source, PuBe-96, was manufactured for Lane Wells in September 1962.
It contained 79.42 g6(5 C1) of Pu-239 and 39.75 g Be.
Its output was 8.61 x 10 n/s and its dimensions were 1.25" 0.D. by 2.86" 0.L.
Dresser returned the source as part of its " turn around" to AmBe.
The source was in poor condition in that it was covered with
^
oil.
They will clean it and run more wipe tests and keep us posted of their findings.
