Dear Mr. Engelken:

In reference to your IE Bulletin 77-OSA which supplemented IE Bulletin 77-05, Electrical Connector Assemblies, we have com-pleted a review in light of this additional guidance.

Combustion Engineering (CE), our Nuclear Steam Supply System supplier, has verified that there are'o connectors of this type used in safety related systems required to be used during a LOCA inside of the containment. They have also stated that connectors outside the containment supplied by Combustion Engineering are located in the control room or rooms adjacent to the control room with an environment not influenced by any accident for which the instruments associated with the con-nectors are used to mitigate consequences of the accident.

Bechtel Engineering, our architect engineer responsible-for the Balance-of-Plant systems, has verified that there are no con-nectors of this type used on safety related equipment within the containment. They have also stated that with the exception of some equipment in the control'room, such as prefabricated cable between CE supplied cabinets and between the process protective cabinet and annunciator isolation system, (Control Building Elevation 140'), all Bechtel scope equipment is furnished with conduit connections or, as appropriate, terminal blocks where moisture is not a consideration. In the control room, lE equipment is qualified per IEEE-344 1975, and IEEE-323 1974 either by pretest or on-going testing, as committed to in the PVNGS Units 1,263 PSAR.

January 5, 1977 Page 2 We feel that since we have verified that there are no un-qualified electrical connectors of the type specified in IE Bulletins 77-05 and 77-05A which must perform their intended function after having been subjected to accident conditions when contained in a system inside or outside containment whose function is to mitigate that accident, the problems identified by Sandia will not be present at PVNGS.

Very truly yours, E. E. Van Brunt, Jr.

APS Vice President.
