SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT 1 - LICENSING CONDITION REVIEW (TAC NO. 68102)
By letter dated May 10, 1988, Carolina Power 5 Light Company submitted Failure Analysis Associates Report PA-R-88-03-15, "Metallurgical Evaluation of EDG Bases from CPSL Shearon Harris Nuclear Station."
The report was submitted pursuant to paragraph 6.a of the Attachment of the Shearon Harris Operating
- License, NPF-63.
The subject condition states:
The engine base shall be inspected for degenerate microstructure (Widmanstaetten Graphite) and the results submitted to the NRC for evaluation.
We have evaluated the microstructure presented in the report and agree with the conclusions stated therein; e.g., that the structures are free of Widmanstaetten graphite and are typical of pearlitic gray cast iron.
The certified chemical and physical properties are stated to be within the nomina 1
property range for ASTM A-48 class 40 gray cast iron.
The staff has concluded that the license condition has been fully satisfied.
