Docket No.50-244 Dr. Robert C. Mecredy, General Manager Nuclear Production Rochester Gas 5 Electric Corporation 89 East Avenue Rochester, New York 14649-0001

Dear Dr. Mecredy:

SUBJECT:

REACTOR COOLANT PUMP TRIP FOR GINNA - TAC N0.49677 For the reactor coolant pump (RCP) trip issue defined in TMI Action Plan Item II.K.3.5 (Multiplant Action G-01), the staff generically approved the Westinghouse Owners Group (WOG) methodology in the Generic Letter, 85-12, with the condition that plant-specific information needs to be addressed.

Our review of the Ginna plant-specific information, included in your letters dated April 22 and December 21, 1983 and April 10, 1984, has progressed to a degree that we can conclude that the WOG methodology has significantly improved the reactor safety, and there are no major safety-signficant concerns for the plant-specific information.

Accordingly, we have completed our review of your plant-specific RCP trip setpoint development and find it acceptable.

This issue may be the subject of on-site verification.

Sincerely, gIiginal SCne~ W Patrick M. Sears, Project Manager Project Directorate I-3 Division of Reactor Projects I/II cc:
