In conducting our review of your June 12, 1987 submittal relating to expanding the spent fuel pool storage capacity at the St. Lucie Plant, Unit No. 1, we have determined that we will need additional 'information identified in the enclosure to continue our review.

In order for us to maintain our review schedule, your response is requested within 45 days of your receipt of this letter.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter affect fewer than 10 respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

LUCIE UNIT 1 SPENT FUEL RERACKING 1.

Recent anomalies have been identified in the Quad Cities and Point Beach spent fuel pools due to Boraflex shrinkage caused by irradiation.

Based on this, provide justification to demonstrate the continued acceptability of Boraflex for application in the St. Lucie spent fuel pool.

2.

Based on the recent information pertaining to degradation of Boraflex, provide any changes to the inservice surveillance program for Boraflex and described the frequency of examination and acceptance criteria for continued use.

3.

Describe the corrective acti""..s to be taken if degraded Boraflex specimens or absorber sheets are found in the spent fuel pool.

4.

Provide information regarding criteria for replacing the filter demineralizer of the spent fuel pool clean-up system to ensure its effectiveness to handle the high-density storage.
