JAN 06 \\89 Duke Power Company ATTN:

Mr. H. B. Tucker, Vice President Nuclear Production Department 422 South Church Street Charlotte, NC 28242 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

DOCKET NOS. 50-269, 50-270, AND 50-287 As part of the NRC Confirmatory Measurements Program, two liquid samples spiked with radionuclides will be sent to the Oconee facility for radiochemical analyses.

The larger sample (approximately 1000 ml)- is to be analyzed for tritium, strontium-89, strontium-90, and iron-55 in accordance with your approved procedures for analysis of liquid waste samples, plus a Cobalt-60 analysis using all six germanium detectors with the 1000 ml geometry.

The smaller sample (approximately 50 ml) is to be analyzed for Cobalt-60 using all six germanium detectors with the 50 ml geometry.

If routine beta analyses of this type are normally performed by a vendor, this vendor should be used to analyze the spiked samples. The spiked samples, with instructions, will be sent under separate cover from the Department of Energy's Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory within approximately thirty days.

We also request that the analysis be completed as soon as practicable, but no later than sixty days from receipt of the samples. Results should be sent to:

U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region II, ATTN: Mr. J. B. Kahle, Chief, Radiological Effluents and Chemistry Section.

It is requested that the supporting data (computer printouts) be included with the Cobalt-60 analyses.

Our evaluation of your results will be discussed with your staff and documented in our next inspection report for this area.

Spiked samples will be sent to you on an annual basis as part of our routine inspection program.

Sincerely, Thomas R. Decker, Acting Chief Emergency Preparedness and Radiological Protection Branch Division of Radiation Safety and Safeguards cc:
