August 10, 1990 Docket No. 50-206 Mr. Harold B. Ray Senior Vice President Southern California Edison Company Irvine Operations Center 23 Parker Irvine, California 92718

Dear Mr. Ray:

SUBJECT:

INSERVICE TESTING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1 (TAC NO. 74792)

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that we have completed our review associated with your response to Generic Letter 89-04, "Guidance on Developing Acceptable Inservice Testing Programs."

By letter dated April 6, 1990, we accepted your response to the generic letter and by letters dated May 18 and July 30, 1990, we provided our response to your requests for relief from ASME Code requirements. Therefore, we consider our actions to be complete.

As a result of our review, we identified that your methodology for testing the safety injection pumps, refueling water pumps and the feedwater pumps for San Onofre Unit 1 should be reconsidered in terms of obtaining more reliable and meaningful test data (NRC letters dated May 18 and May 24, 1990).

Should you determine that additional relief is required from ASME Code requirements as a result of your continuing evaluations regarding this matter, please contact us.

Sincerely, Oryna Signed By:
