Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners:

I am a resident of New York City, and I am writing this letter to object to the license renewal of Indian Point Nuclear Plants, because the power plants are located very close to big cities and approximately 17 to 20 million people reside or work within 50 miles radius.

If there is going to be a nuclear accident at the Indian Point, it would be inevitable to become a catastrophic disaster, because there is no clear evacuation plan set in place for those 20 million people.

In addition to our concerns, we heard very disturbing news recently on the security of the Indian Point nuclear power plants. Just this week, a security lieutenant at the Indian Point nuclear power complex filed a lawsuit claiming that the plant is not secure and that staffers regularly watch DVDs, play video games and sleep on the job. The suit also claims the plant also routinely fails anti-terrorism drills.

As we all know, in March 2011, there was a nuclear accident in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants in Japan. More than 18 months has passed since the accident, but the Japanese government, scientists, nuclear engineers and other experts do not know how to control the accident. Radioactive materials are still being released into the environment from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex. Many farm lands were contaminated with the radioactive fallouts from the Fukushima Daiichi, and accordingly, radioactive nuclides were detected even from farm products and seafoods that were produced or caught more than a hundred of miles away from the Fukushima Daiichi. Japanese people are constantly living in fear because they do not know whether the foods they purchase from grocery stores are safe to give to their love ones, especially to infants and young children.

Residential areas, schools and other public spaces were also contaminated with radioactive fallouts from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. National government and municipalities are trying to decontaminate contaminated lands with help from local citizens, but the decontamination work was found not effective to lower the level of radioactivity.

After the nuclear disaster, in order to minimize the financial burden of the Japanese government, the government has been downplaying the gravity of the situation by constantly telling to local citizens that "there is no immediate danger", "no evidence of health risks if the radiation exposure dose is under 100mSv per year", "Do not be so anxious. Stress is 0

the most harmful thing to children", "Radiation will not fall onto you if you smile", "no one has died from the radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi", and so on.

We also know that in Fukushima, most of the municipalities failed to provide Potassium Iodide tablets to local citizens soon after the accident. We also know that 18 months after the accident, 43.7% of about 80,000 Fukushima children who had thyroid exams by the government had thyroid abnormalities with cysts or nodules in their thyroids. One of them was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

This could happen here as long as we have a nuclear power plant in our neighborhood. Please listen to our concerns, and please make right choices for our children.

Thank you.

Sincerely, Mari Inoue organization:
