SUBJECT:

UPDATE - CURRENT NRC ACTIONS DURING PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNION CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

As of 8:00 a.m., on June 6, 2012, members of the United Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 369 at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station and Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. have not agreed to a new contract. UWUA Local 369 includes members of the Maintenance, Radiation Protection, Chemistry, and Operations organizations. The contract, which had been previously extended, expired at midnight on June 5.

Entergy has implemented a contingency plan which includes the use of replacement workers to staff union positions throughout the plant. NRC resident inspectors, supplemented by regional inspectors, have implemented 24-hour coverage at the site (Inspection Procedure 92711, "Continued Implementation of Strike Plans during an Extended Strike"). An NRC Branch Chief is also onsite to assist the resident and regional inspectors, and to observe Entergy's contingency plan implementation to ensure Pilgrim meets its regulatory requirements.

The information presented herein has been discussed with Entergy and is current as of June 6, 2012, at 8:00 a.m. The NRC has kept the Commonwealth of Massachusetts informed. Region I Public Affairs is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
