UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555"()001 November 2, 2011 Ms. Rochelle Olson, Public Affairs Manager Energy Northwest MD 1480 P. O. Box 968 Richland, WA 99352

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL PUBLIC MEETINGS REGARDING COLUMBIA GENERATING STATION LICENSE RENEWAL ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW

Dear Ms. Olson:

This is a response to your letter dated September 6, 2011, in which you requested that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) consider holding a meeting in Seattle for public input on the Columbia Generating Station license renewal environmental review.

After careful consideration of this request, the NRC has decided not to hold additional public meetings about the Columbia Generating Station license renewal environmental review.

At the time your letter was received, the NRC had already made arrangements to hold public meetings in Richland, Washington, on September 27, 2011. That location was selected as a reasonably convenient location for citizens in the Tri-Cities area, which is the closest populated area to the plant. It has been the NRC's practice to hold license renewal public meetings in the vicinity of the plant because citizens who live nearby are those who would most likely be affected by the decision to renewal the operating license.

As a result of your request, the NRC added a telephone conference capability to the public meetings in Richland. This feature allowed approximately 45 people to participate in the meetings via telephone.

R. Olson - 2 Public meetings are only one method of submitting comments to the NRC. As described in Federal Register notice 76 FR 54502, comments may be submitted to the NRC by mail, online, or via fax. All comments will be treated the same whether they are received verbally at a public meeting or in writing. The NRC will respond to all substantive comments in the final supplemental environmental impact statement. The deadline for written comments is November 16, 2011.

Sincerely, U/:. /" 9
