Dear U.S. Nuclear Utility customers:
Flow Control Division Anchor/Oarlillg Valves BW/IP Valves Edward Valves VaJlek Conlrol Producls Worcester Valves Please find the attached USNRC Notice 11 0609 that has been filed with US Nuclear Regulatory Commission in accordance with the provisions of 10CFR-Part 21.
The subject valves are Flowserve Figure 848 (threaded ends) or 848Y (socket weld ends) V-pattern bolted bonnet stop valves. The disk nut of the valve in the attached notice separated from the disk. In this case the safety function of the valve was not affected by the separation of the disk nut from the disk.
However, other Figure 848 or 848Y valves may have different safety related functions that could be affected by this type of failure.
These valves would have been manufactured and shipped from our Sulphur Springs, Texas facility until 1987, when it was then transferred to our Raleigh, North Carolina facility. The old design valves were then manufactured at our Raleigh facility from 1987 through late 1992, when the current Figure A848 or A848Y design transition was finalized. These valves may have manufacturer's nameplates identified with "Rockwell", "Rockwell Edward" or "Edward".
The current design Flowserve Figure A848 or A848Y valves manufactured in Raleigh, NC are not affected by this notice as the disk nut was eliminated and the disk is now secured to the stem using a Stellite retaining wire configuration.
In summary there is no impact if the valve nameplate indicates a model that includes an "A" prefix (6848 or 6848Y) signifying the current design configuration.
Due to the volume, age and relocation of this product, we can not identify the specific utilities that may potentially be affected, as such we are providing this general notice for information to all utilities. Per the attached notice we would encourage that any of the old design Figure 848 or 848Y valves be inspected for proper operation for safety related concerns. Should you find it necessary, replacement parts are available for a simple retrofit without removing the valve body from the installed application.
