This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region III staff on this date.

D.C. COOK UNIT 2 FORCED SHUTDOWN FOR GREATER THAN 72 HOURS TO REPAIR REACTOR COOLANT PUMP SEAL DESCRIPTION:

On July 26, 2009, the Cook Nuclear Plant Unit 2 was manually tripped due to a degraded Reactor Coolant Pump Seal.

There were no complications during the plant shutdown. The duration of the shutdown is

expected to exceed 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />.

The utility is investigating the cause of the seal failure and plans to repair the seal.

NRC inspectors will continue to monitor the utility's activities.

The state of Michigan has been informed.

The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with licensee management and is current as of 8:00 a.m. on July 28, 2009.
