OF PUBLIC ENVIRONMENTAL SCOPING MEETINGS RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THE PALO VERDE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOS. ME0261, ME0262, AND ME0263)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted environmental scoping meetings related to the review of the Palo Verde license renewal application submitted by APS.

Two public meetings were conducted on Thursday, June 25, 2009. The afternoon session was held from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Tonopah Valley High School, 38201 West Indian School Road, Tonopah, AZ 85354. The evening session was held from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Estrella Mountain Community College, 3000 North Dysart Road, Avondale, AZ 85392.

Approximately 60 people attended the meetings. The attendees included representatives of the NRC staff, representatives from APS and STARS, members of the public, and local government officials. Public comments and questions addressed a range of issues including the license renewal process, water use, emergency preparedness, radiation hazards, waste disposal, and poor plant performance.

No formal comments on the proposed scope of the environmental impact statement will be accepted during the informal discussions. To be considered, comments must be provided either at the transcribed public meetings or in writing.

Welcome to the NRCs Open House Associated with the LICENSE RENEWAL OVERVIEW AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCOPING PROCESS for the Proposed License Renewal at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2, and 3 This open house is intended to provide an opportunity for interested members of the public and staff from other Federal, State, and local agencies to interact with the NRC staff in an informal information exchange.

The NRC is gathering information necessary to prepare a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) related to the proposed renewal of the operating licenses for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station. Please note that if you wish to provide formal comments regarding the scope of the environmental review for Palo Verde, they can be presented at either session of todays transcribed public meetings. Alternatively, they can be provided in writing or electronically by July 27, 2009. Comments received after this date will be considered while developing the draft SEIS if it is practical to do so, but the NRC staff is able to assure consideration only for comments received on or before July 27, 2009. Written comments on the scope of the SEIS should be sent to:
