SUBJECT:

REVISION OF SCHEDULE FOR THE CONDUCT OF REVIEW OF THE KEWAUNEE POWER STATION LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO.

MD9408)

Dear Mr. Christian:

Enclosed is a revised review schedule for the Kewaunee Power Station (KPS) license renewal (LR) application. As discussed with members of your staff during a telephone conference call held on December 3, 2008, the KPS schedule has been revised to reflect the resource impacts that need to be considered in the LR review as a result of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) operating under a Continuing Resolution (CR) for fiscal year 2009.

In a letter dated September 25, 2008, the NRC staff forwarded the original safety and environmental review schedule for the KPS LR application. The original review schedule was developed using the LR model for completing the review within 22 months of receipt of the application (30 months in case of a hearing). As a result of the ongoing CR and the associated budget constraints, the pace of the NRC staffs review of the KPS LR application has been slowed. This has resulted in the need to extend the original review schedule by approximately five months. An updated review schedule is enclosed.

Please note that additional changes to the KPS LR review schedule may be necessary depending on the length of time the NRC is required to operate under a CR. If you have any questions on the revised schedule, please contact me by telephone at 301-415-4049 or by e-mail at samuel.hernandez@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
