Dear Sirs:
Subject:
Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS)
Units 1, 2, and 3 Docket Nos. STN 50-528, 50-529, and 50-530 Notification and Concurrence of Extension for Submittal of the Revised Supplemental Response to NRC Generic Letter 2004-02 This letter confirms Arizona Public Service Company's (APS) notification and the NRC's concurrence that APS' Revised Supplemental Response to NRC Generic Letter 2004-02 may be extended until December 19, 2009.
As committed, APS has completed the installation of the new, larger containment sump strainers in all three PVNGS units. Plant specific chemical effects testing of the strainer design was performed by the strainer vendor, Control Components, Inc. (CCI), in 2007. Additional testing was completed in Spring 2008 by CCI, and observed by representatives from the NRC and APS, using more conservative parameters than the 2007 tests. The results from the recent tests confirmed the capability of the strainer design to perform its safety function.
APS has received the analysis and validation for the containment sump strainers and technical reviews are complete to demonstrate compliance with GL 2004-02.
This extension was requested to provide the results of those efforts in the format requested by GL 2004-02 guidance. APS makes no commitments in this correspondence.
