OF PUBLIC SCOPING MEETINGS CONDUCTED TO SUPPORT THE REVIEW OF THE BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NOS. MC4641 AND MC4642)

Environmental scoping meetings were conducted to support the review of the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units 1 and 2 (BSEP) license renewal applications submitted by Carolina Power

& Light Company (CP&L), now doing business as Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc. Two public meetings were conducted on Thursday, January 27, 2005, at the Southport City Hall, 201 E. Moore Street, Southport, North Carolina. Approximately 40 people attended the meetings, including members of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff, NRC contractors from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, members of the public, representatives from CP&L, news media, and local government officials. Seven individuals provided comments during the meetings, all of the comments were in support of license renewal for BSEP. A combined listing of attendees for both sessions is provided in Enclosure 1. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the meeting handouts. Enclosures 3 and 4 contain the official corrected transcripts for the afternoon and evening meetings, respectively. Enclosure 5 contains the slides used during the NRCs presentation.

  • The NRC staff will host informal discussions one hour prior to each meeting session. No formal comments on the proposed scope of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be accepted during the informal discussions. To be considered, comments must be provided either at the transcribed public meetings (see agenda, above) or in writing, as described in the attached Federal Register Notice.

Welcome to the NRCs Open House Associated with the Environmental Review for License Renewal at Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units 1 and 2 This open house is intended to provide an opportunity for interested members of the public and staff from other Federal, State, and local agencies to interact with the NRC staff in an informal information exchange.

The NRC is gathering information necessary to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in support of the proposed renewal of the operating license for Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units 1 and 2. Please note that if you wish to provide formal comments regarding the scope of the environmental review for Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Units 1 and 2, they must be presented at either session of todays transcribed public meetings or provided in writing or electronically by March 11, 2005. Comments received after this date will be considered while developing the draft EIS if it is practical to do so, but the NRC staff is able to assure consideration only for comments received on or before March 11, 2005. Written comments on the scope of the EIS should be sent to:
