Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-440, License No. NPF-58 Discovery of Tritium in Groundwater 30-Day Report in Accordance with the Industry Ground Water Protection Initiative Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) hereby submits the attached 30-day report in accordance with Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) 07-07, "Industry Ground Water Protection Initiative - Final Guidance Document," dated August 2007. A sample of groundwater taken in the Perry Nuclear Power Plant Auxiliary Building was found to contain tritium at a concentration that exceeded the threshold value for voluntary reporting in accordance with guidance in NEI 07-07. The initial NRC notification of this condition was completed on January 21, 2013 (Event Number 49746)

Perry Nuclear Power Plant, Discovery of Tritium in Groundwater, 30-Day Report in Accordance with the Industry Ground Water Protection Initiative L-14-091 Page 1 of 1 This report is being submitted in accordance with the Nuclear energy Institute (NEI) 07-07, Industry Ground Water Protection Initiative - Final Guidance Document. The report was generated as a result of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) Auxiliary Building Groundwater sample tritium result that triggered the communication protocol as required by NEI 07-07.

On January 20, 2014, analyses of a sample taken from Perry Nuclear Power Plant's Auxiliary Building Groundwater confirmed the presence of tritium at a concentration of 46,200 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The discovery was made following a notification of a Feedwater leak from a Feedwater Venturi. The concentration was above the 20,000 pCi/L threshold for voluntarily reporting for a non-drinking water pathway, as indicated in NEI 07-

07. On January 21, 2014, PNPP voluntarily notified the following agencies: Ohio Emergency Management Agency, Lake County Emergency Management Agency, Ashtabula County Emergency Management Agency, Geauga County Department of Emergency Services, and NEI. A 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(xi) report was made to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) as a result of the State and Local notifications.

PNPP repaired the Feedwater Venturi leak on January 21, 2014. The cause of the Feedwater Venturi leak is being investigated in the stations Corrective Action Process.

Monitoring of the stations Effluent pathways for Tritium at the site boundary indicates that tritium in the groundwater has not migrated off the plant property. Accordingly, there is no public exposure pathway in groundwater and no estimated annual dose to any member of the public via a groundwater pathway.

Since there is no estimated annual dose increase to a member of the public from the groundwater pathway, no corrective actions are necessary to reduce the projected annual dose to a member of the public to less then the limits of 10 CFR 50, Appendix I of 5 mrem to the total body or any organ. PNPP will continue to monitor the event and will initiate corrective actions as needed.
