An announced, special inspection was conducted at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Generating Station by two nondestructive examination (NDE) inspectors.
Included in this inspection was a review of quality records involving the torus wall and=condenser water box corrosion monitoring program.
Also, an independent ultrasonic thickness measurement inspection was
'erformed by the NRC inspectors to determine the adequacy of the licensee's corrosion erosion monitoring program.

Submitted by the licensee, for review,. were calculations prepared by a contractor.
~Re nlt: No violations were identified, however, the licensee has committed to informing the NRC during each outage of the inspections to be performed on the torus and condenser water boxes.
Table 1 on pages 4 through 9 are specific areas and thickness readings taken by the NRC technicians.
Highlighted areas indicate thicknesses that are near or below the minimum allowable thickness for erosion/corrosio.0
Inde endent Mea urements - NR Nondestructive Examination and alit Records Review of the Torus and Water Box rro i n Pro ram
The torus on Unit No.
1 has experienced corrosion of the wall over the life of the plant.
The NRC has taken indepen'dent measurements p'eriodically to verify compliance with minimum design requirements.
During this inspection, ultrasonic thickness measurements were performed on six specific areas on the Unit 1 torus.
The examinations were performed in accordance with NRC procedure NDE-11, Rev.
1 and site procedure NDEP-UT-6.05, Rev. 5.
In'eluded in this inspection was a review of quality records associated with'he develop'ment of thinning allowances for four main condenser water boxes and Nine
'Mile Point Unit 1 (NMP1) Torus Shell Thickness Measurement Program..
Six specific grid areas were laid out in accordance with Niagara Mohawk correspondence, dated October 16, 1991, (file SM1-PE91-0006) which showed a plan view of the bottom of the suppression chamber.
A detail of each bay, grid, template and alignment marks is shown on Figure 1, of the'ubject document.
Data taken by the licensee's NDE personnel were reviewed and compared to that taken by the NRC to assure the reliability of the licensee torus shell evaluation program.
No violations were identified, however, Bay ¹17 inside and outside has several areas that should be closely monitored.
The licensee has made a commitment to notify the NRC when additional inspections are made.
The enclosed tables are the specific areas examined, by the NRC inspectors.
Areas highlighted by bold print are near the allowable minimum of 0.447" calculated by the licensee subcontractor as outlined by memorandum SM1-S91-0347 and contained in calculation s22.4-WW198-STAT01, Rev. 4.
Records were reviewed for four condenser water boxes.
These were in the form of Problem Report number 1239, Base Material Wall Thinning, Nine Mile Point Unit 1.
According to the aforementioned records, the licensee has committed to visually inspecting water box coatings and base material (where exposed),
obtain nondestructive test baseline data inside and outside on exposed water box surfaces and establish a time frame for coating and repair.
The water condenser box inspection willbe completed during the outage of September 1992.
3.0 Exit Interview An exit interview was held on January 30, 1992, with members of the licensee's staff noted in Paragraph 1. The inspector discussed the scope of the inspection and presented his finding USNRC INDEPENDENT MEASUREMENTS NINE MILEPOINT UNIT1, GRID LOCATIONBAY¹6 OUTSIDE A
