Inspection on August 4-7, 1980 (Report No. 80-59)

This inspection was conducted at NECO, Beatty, Nevada to observe low level waste shipments.

Vehicle placarding, package conditions, package labeling, and shipping papers were inspected. Radiation surveys and checks for removable radioactive contamination were performed on 7 shipments.

Sixty-four inspector hours (two inspectors) were expended in this effort.

Stephen Bump from the Nevada State Health Division was present at the Beatty Site on August 4, 1980.

A representative from the Department of Transportation was not present during this inspection. No containers were opened.

Background This composite report details the inspection of seven shipments of low-level radioactive waste received by the Nuclear Engineering Company at Richland, Washington between August 4-7, 1980.

No-items of noncompliance with NRC or DOT regulations were observed during this inspection.

Stephen Bump from the Nevada State Health Division was present on August 4, 1980.

Representatives from NRC headquarters and the Department of Transportation were not present during this inspection.

Instruments used for radiation surveys were Xetex model 305B's serial numbers 8181 and 0764 due for recalibration on September 25, 1980 and October 11, 1980 respectively. Contamination surveys of unloaded trailers and checks for removable radioactive contamination were performed with an Eberline E-520 in conjunction with an Eberline HP-260 pancake probe due for recalibration September 18, 1980.

350081 The vehicle carried 60 drums of " Radioactive LSA material". Radiation surveys of the trailer indicated a maximum dose rate of 4.0 mr/hr at the surface of the trailer and 1.0 mr/hr at 2 meters from the side of the trailer. The maximum reading measured in the cab was 0.1 mr/hr.

Results of swipe tests on drums and the survey of the trailer after unloading indicaied no significant radioactive contamination above background.

No item of noncompliance was identified.

Results of swipe tests on drums and the survey of the trailer after-unloading indicated no significant radioactive contamination above background.

The maximum reading measured in the cab was 0.6 mr/hr.

Results of swipe tests on the drums and the survey of the trailer after unloading indicated no significant radioactive contamination.

Radiation surveys indicated a maximum dose rate of 2.9 mr/hr at the surface of.the cask. This was an open transport vehicle. The

0.6 mr/hr.. The maximum reading measured in the cab was 0.2 mr/hr.

Results of swipes on the cask and trailer, and the survey of trailer
