  • DUKE POWER COMPANY OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION UNIT 1 Report Number: R0-269/82-05 Report Date: April 1, 1982 Occurrence Date: March 2, 1982 Facility: Oconee Unit 1, Seneca, South Carolina Identification of Occurrence: Reactor Building Spray Pump 1A inoperable Conditions Prior to Occurrence: 100% Power Description of Occurrence: On March 2, 1982, the lA Reactor Building Spray Pump was declared inoperable due to inability to achieve the flow rate required by the Reactor Building Spray Pump Operability Test.

Apparent Cause of Occurrence: The failure of this pump was the result of the operator allowing the pump to run for approximately three (3) hours with no suction flow.

Analysis of Occurrence: During this incident all three Reactor Building Cooling Units were verified to be operating and the redundant Reactor Building Spray Pump was operable. Thus, the health and safety of the public were not affected by this incident.

Corrective Action: The LA Reactor Building Spray Pump was replaced with a rebuilt pump and tested per the Reactor Building Spray Pump Operability Test. The test was satisfactory and the pump was declared operable.

The Control Room Operator responsible for damaging the pump was counseled by the Operating Engineer and made aware of the results of his action. He was also counseled as to the importance of keeping the Unit Supervisor informed of any problems involving his unit.
