17 October 1979 Identification of Occurrence:

Inoperable absolute position indication for Rod 8 Group 1 contrary to Technical Specification 3.1.3.3.

Conditions Trior to Occurrence:

Mode.1 power operation (98%).

Description of Occurrence:

At 2300, in Mode 1, it was discovered that safety rod 1-8 absolute rod position indication would not respond to red movement during the. performance of SP-333, Control dod Exercises.

Rod 1-8 position was verified at 2340 at 100% withdrawn. Control rod position is'being verified at 100% withdrawn every eight (8) hours.

Designation of Apparent Cause:

The cause of this event is unknown.

Analysis of Occurrence:

No effect upon the plant or general public.

Relative rod position indication for Rod 1-8 was operable.

Corrective Action

Further investigation will be conducted during subsequent sur-veillance activities.

Corrective action will be based upon the results of that investigation.

P.I. tube will be replaced during next plant outage.

Failure Data:

This is the second occurrence of this type reported for Rod 1-8.
