No: II-22-025 September 30, 2022 CONTACT: David Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Monitoring Hurricane Ian The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has staffed its Incident Response Center in the Region II office in Atlanta, to monitor the nuclear power plants near the path of Hurricane Ian.

The NRC has sent an additional inspector to the Brunswick nuclear power plant south of Wilmington, North Carolina, to supplement the resident inspectors assigned to the site. The region is also prepared to dispatch region-based inspectors or inspectors from unaffected plants to other sites in the region, should it become necessary.

In preparing for Hurricane Ian, the staff at Brunswick, and the VC Summer and Robinson nuclear power plants in South Carolina, have been working through severe weather procedures, including ensuring that all loose debris and equipment has been removed or secured, and conducting walk-downs of important systems and equipment.

Our resident inspectors on site have been verifying that all of the preparations have been completed, said NRC Region II Administrator Laura Dudes. Were satisfied that these actions will enable safe operations during this storm.

NRC staff members will monitor Hurricane Ian while remaining in contact with plant operators, NRC on-site inspectors, the NRCs headquarters Operations Center, and state emergency officials in potentially affected states.
