No: II-14-032 May 19, 2014 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Meeting to Discuss Annual Assessment of Robinson Nuclear Power Plant Officials of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission have scheduled a public meeting for Wednesday, May 28 to discuss the agencys assessment of safety performance for the Robinson nuclear power plant during 2013. The Robinson plant, which is operated by Duke Energy, is located near Hartsville, S.C., about 26 miles northwest of Florence.

NRC staff will have an open house and poster session beginning at 5 p.m. EDT at the Hartsville Public Library, 147 W. College Ave., in Hartsville. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., NRC staff will give a presentation on the plants safety performance in 2013. NRC staff will be available after the presentation to answer questions from the public on the plants performance as well as the agencys oversight and inspection.

Overall, the NRC staff concluded that the Robinson plant operated safely in 2013 and will receive normal detailed baseline oversight and inspection efforts in 2014. The most recent inspection findings and performance indicators at the plant were green, meaning they had very low safety significance. The plant did receive additional oversight and inspection during 2013 due to a white inspection finding of low to moderate safety significance. It involved failure to perform adequate preventative maintenance on a key diesel generator.

The NRC uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess plant performance. The colors start with green, and escalate to white, yellow or red, based on the significance of the issues. Inspection findings and performance indicators are updated on the NRCs web site (www.nrc.gov ) each quarter.

Our resident and region-based inspectors spend many hours monitoring plant activities to ensure that the plant operates safely, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. We hold these meetings every year to make our staff available to people who live close to the plant and answer questions about our oversight.

The annual assessment letter for the Robinson plant is available on the NRC website as is current performance information for Robinson.

Routine inspections are carried out by the NRC resident inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the Region II office in Atlanta. Among the areas at the Robinson plant to be

inspected this year by NRC specialists are fire protection procedures and operator licensing examinations.
