Roger Hannah, 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford, 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Virtual Meeting to Discuss 2019 Safety Performance of Summer Nuclear Power Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2019 safety performance of the Summer nuclear power plant, operated by Dominion Energy, during a virtual meeting scheduled for April 2.

The session will be held from 3-4 p.m., Eastern Time, with NRC employees responsible for plant inspections participating, including the resident inspectors based at the site. The NRC determined that the Summer nuclear power plant operated safely during 2019. All inspection findings and performance indicators had very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process, which requires thousands of hours of inspection each year, uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Inspections at the Summer plant are performed by the two NRC resident inspectors and other inspection specialists from the NRC Region II office in Atlanta. Due to current COVID-19 precautions, the resident inspectors are performing many inspection activities remotely and visiting the site periodically. Region-based inspectors are monitoring plant areas remotely or postponing inspections able to be performed later.

The annual assessment letter for the Summer nuclear power plant, which includes upcoming inspection plans, is available on the NRC website. Current performance information for Summer is also available and is updated on a quarterly basis.
