SUBJECT:

APPLICATION FOR AMENDMENT NO. 8 TO THE MODEL NO. NAC-UMS STORAGE CASK - ACCEPTANCE LETTER

Dear Mr. Fowler:

By letter dated December 18, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML20003D019), NAC International (NAC) submitted an application for Amendment No. 8 to the Model No. NAC-UMS storage cask. The application proposes adding damaged boiling-water reactor spent fuel and associated items. Staff performed an acceptance review of your application to determine whether the application contains sufficient technical information in scope and depth to allow the staff to complete a detailed technical review.

This letter informs you that the application contains the necessary information to begin our technical review. We have established a schedule for the technical review of your amendment request. The schedule allows for the staff to issue a possible request for additional information in mid-June 2020, and a draft certificate of compliance and safety evaluation report for rulemaking in mid-January 2021, based on you responding to a request for additional information by mid-August 2020. If no additional information is needed, the draft certificate of compliance and safety evaluation report may be issued by the end of August 2020. The staff estimates that completing the safety review of this application will require approximately 300 staff hours.

Please reference Docket No. 72-1015 and Enterprise Project Identifier (EPID) No.

L-2019-LLA-0291 in future correspondence related to this request.

Sincerely,

/RA/
