ATTACHMENT SAFETY EVALUATION OF FRAMATOME C0GEMA FUELS TOPICAL REPORT BAW-10186P
" EXTENDED BURNUP EVALUATION" 1 INTRODUCTION i
In a letter dated November 24, 1992, from J..H. Taylor, Framatome Cogema Fuels (FCF), to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), FCF submitted a
- Topical Report BAW-1018CP, " Extended Burnup Evaluation," for NRC review.
BAW-10186P de.;cribes an improved extended burnup methodology that FCF intends l
to apply for fuel reload applications. The purpose of this improved methodology is to extend the analytical capability to a somewhat higher burnup range than the previously approved burnup range for different fuel designs.
The NRC staff was supported in this review by its consultant, Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). Our consultant's technical evaluation report (TER), which is attached, provides technical findings relative to its review.
2 EVALUATION The staff has reviewed the enclosed TER, and concludes that the TER provides an adequate technical basis to approve BAW-10186P. Therefore, the staff '
agrees with PNL's conclusion that the improved methodology described in !
BAW-10186P is acceptable. Based on our review, the staff adopts the findings in the attached TER.
3 CONCLUSION
! The staff has reviewed the FCF's extended burnup methodology described in BAW-10186P, and finds that the methodology is adequate and thus acceptable for reload licensing applications of FCF's Mark-B and Mark-BW fuel designs.
