- The Marotta Valves presently installed are very difficult to keep operationt.1, also valves manufactured by Target Rock (installed on head vents) have experienced similar problems The inoperability;of these valves has caused the inability to shut down Unit #2 in an. orderly.

manner and delays in the restart of the unit.,

The DCR will not change any plant process .cuf discharge and will not effect the existing environmental impact.of the-plant. Therefore, no unreviewed safety or environmental questions are involved.

SALEM GENERATING STATION MONTHLY OPERATING

SUMMARY

- UNIT NO. 2 MARCH 1987 i

On Sunday, March 1, the high voltage lines from Hope Creek to Keeney (5015) parted when a tanker struck and destroyed one of the towers in the Delaware River. Two other towers suffered damage from the sudden change in tower forces. The Salem and Hope Creek Units were reduced to approximately 75% and were held at that level for electrical system stability. Initial indications are that repairs could take between 12 and 18 months to return the line to service. In the interim, steps are being taken to change the relaying protection (trip-a-unit scheme) so that the units can be returned to near 100% power.

The unit began the month at essentially full power and operated at that-level until March 1, 1987 (Sunday) when it was reduced to 75%

L power, limited by electrical system stability as mentioned above. The unit continued at that level until March 6, 1987, when it was reduced to about 65%, still limited by electrical stability.

After Unit I was removed from service, Unit 2 power was increased on j March 9, 1987 to 88% and to 96% on March 10, 1987, where it remained until March 12, 1987. The loss of generator field excitation caused a turbine reactor trip on March 12, 1987. After thorough investigation and testing, the unit was returned to service on March 14, 1987 and by March 15, 1987 had achieved 93% power where it remained until March 17, 1987. Power was reduced to 75%, and subsequently to 72% on March 18, 1987, for grid stability.

The unit continued at 790 MW until Friday, March 27, when the trip-a-unit system was energized following a presentation meeting with the NRC. A power escalation was initiated and 89% power was achieved during the weekend. On Tuesday, March 31, power was reduced at the Load Dispatcher's request because the trip-a-unit scheme was de-energized due to an approaching thunderstorm. Power was increased to approximately 87% later the same day.
