G. E. TEST REACTOR REVIEW  !

I and several members of my staff (Harold Lefevre, John Kelleher, Sandra Wastler, Leor Reiter, and Renner Hofmann) attended a briefing by Darrel Herd on the recent mapping that he has completed in the vicinity of the G. E. Test Reactor site near Livermore, California. The purpose of the briefing was to bring all interested parties up-to-date on what is known about the geologic structure of the Livennore region. This is not intend-ed to be a summary of that meeting, but only to aake you aware of the situation as we see it with respect to the review of the G. E. Test Reactor. l Dr. Herd has conducted reasonably detailed field mapping in the vicinity l of the G. E. Test Reactor site. He has identified a number of faults with )

relatively young geological movement on them. However, it is clear that i his mapping is not adequate to clearly determine the history of movement l on the various faults potentially important to the G. E. Test Reactor in the depth that we require for our review. We, therefore, anticipate ,

substantial additional work by the utility during the course of our review.

General Electric has submitted preliminary information in support of its application for renewal of the license for the test reactor facility. We have not yet completed our review of this material, but expect to do so within the next week or two. When our review is completed we expect to conduct a site visit to insoect some of the faulting in the site vicinity.

The site visit is now anticipated for the first or second week of October.

Dr. Herd is obviously a central figure in the review of the geology of this site because of his existing geologic mapping in the area. He re-quested that all requests for information made of him be coordinated through the NRC. I have passed this request on to both the applicant and to the Division of Operating Reactors and expect that all requests for in~ formation from Dr. Herd will be made through me, Renner or Harold Leferve, l
