TELEPHONE CAIL WITH GE AND CONSULTXiTS . _ _, 4 3 _. , . . . _ . , . _ _ p.

Cn October 24, I together with Bob Jackson and Renner Hofmann spoke with Doug Hoggett of GE and Dick Harding and Doug Hacilton of Earth Sciences Associates (Consultant to GE). The purpose of the call was to determine details of GE's plans for further investigations of faulting near the GE Test Reactor at Vallecitos, Ca. and to assess the status of the investigations.

GE told us that they plan further investigations of the Verona fault as follows:

1. An additional trench vill be opened above trench #1 at the head of what GE believes to be a landslide feature. They feel that this work vill perrit thea to demonstrate that the apparent thrust fault exp; sed in ::ar.ch #1'is in fact a landslide feature.
2. " hey plan t: enacate the h111 side near trench #2. They feel that this vill pa :it the to establish the cause of the anomalies observed in trench #2.
3. They plan to put another trench across the projected surf ace trace of the Verena f ault between trench #1 and trench #2.

Ve urged them in addition to:

1. Investigate the postulated Verona f ault in areas where there is obviously no landslide activity in order to avoid confusion.

2 To investigate the anomalies south of the postulated Verona fault in the vicinity of the GETR.

n Wa consider this proposed investigation to be a good plan for the short time available. It will be followed cloself by the staff and modifications will be suggested when the developing data indicate a need to do so.

We explained our basis for feeling that the Verona f ault could have '

significant displacement on it and for our tentative conclusion that it could have a wide zone of breakage at the ground surface.

They should have the trenches cleaned and dried out by t;he end of this week. We have scheduled a site visit for that.t [.
