Dear Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners,

I am writing to you today as the Director of an International Organization with Economic and Consultative status with the United Nations, and as a concerned citizen from the United States about our energy future and effects of nuclear power on our society. After having lived through the nuclear disaster in Japan on March 11th, 2011, I find it incredibly disappointing that we continue to ignore the negative impact that nuclear energy has on our society, our environment and our economy. At this very moment, I am working on a traveling photo exhibit about Fukushima, which includes images from sixteen international photographers who witnessed the nuclear disaster with us in Japan last year. Our photo exhibit about Fukushima had its debut in New York City and is now being shown in Tokyo. We will show it next in Washington DC during an appeal for a nuclear free world on Sept 21-23rd, and from there we will continue to use these images to raise awareness about this issue and encourage others to join us in the fight to close down Indian Point Nuclear power plant and get rid of all nuclear energy in the United States. I lived in Tokyo for ten years, working for an International organization and now I have been transferred to the office in the United Nations Plaza in New York City. After moving back to New York, I was frustrated when I learned about Indian Point Nuclear Power plant and the lack of care taken within the plant.

It is impossible to imagine the effects that the poor management of these plants will have on the local community. Pipes that have not been replaced, and cracks in the containers leading to leaking radiation are my greatest fear, and if we have anything close to an earthquake again in New York, you would be putting the entire city at risk. And what happens if there is an accident ? Do you have an evacuation plan ? Where will all of us in New York City go to ?

How will we be notified ? Who decides the evacuation zone and when ? Living in Tokyo, I know it was impossible to evacuate the entire city.. .and now in New York, I can not imagine an evacuation plan that would safely protect all of our local citizens without causing major panic and a chaotic situation leading to unnecessary radiation exposure and life threatening circumstances. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for the nuclear power plants.... WE WANT THEM CLOSED immediately and will continue to raise awareness and fight until they are no longer a threat to our society. We have learned from experience, and we will share our experiences from Japan with as many people as possible to help those who are ignorant to the dangers of nuclear power understand the human threat it has to our society. Please help us, it is your duty.
