October 25, 2007 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-IV-07-008C This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

UPDATE - SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BRUSH FIRES AND SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION (SONGS) STATUS DESCRIPTION: NRC exited Monitoring Mode at 11:47 a.m. PDT on October 25. NRC originally entered Monitoring Mode at 3:35 a.m. PDT, October 24, to track brush fires in the vicinity of San Onfore Nuclear Generating Station. Both units remain shut down for maintenance related outages.

The fires around SONGS are approximately nine miles away and do not present a danger to the site. The electrical grid is stable, and adequate offsite power sources are available for all site loads. All required evacuation and access routes around the site are open, and the licensee has ensured adequate staff is available for emergency response if needed. NRC inspectors in the area continue to monitor licensee and offsite response activities.

NRC staff continues to coordinate with the licensee, FEMA, and local response organizations to evaluate offsite response capabilities as the licensee makes preparations for the restart of Unit 2.

The state of California has been informed.
