The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

ARREST ASSOCIATED WITH ALLEGED THREATS AGAINST EMPLOYEES AT SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DESCRIPTION:

On January 4, 2002, Southern California Edison learned that a former employee, who had worked at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, allegedly made threats against other company employees.

Southern California Edison treated these threats as potential violence in the workplace issues and notified law enforcement authorities. The FBI reviewed the alleged threats and determined that there was no threat to the nuclear facility. The alleged threats were investigated by the Orange County sheriffs department. A warrant was issued and the individual was arrested on January 8, 2002.

News accounts of the apprehension reported a sizable cache of weapons and ammunition and unidentified chemicals.

At the time the employee left the company in December 2001, he had not had access to the nuclear plant protected area and had not worked on safety-related equipment since 1995.

The state of California will be informed.

The licensee has issued a press release. Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the resident inspector and through media sources. Region IV has informed the EDO, NRR, and PA.

This information has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 5 p.m. (CST) on January 9, 2002.
